Che Adams was the hero for Torino, scoring one and assisting another for a surprise win over Atalanta, with Mario Pasalic’s stoppage-time penalty saved.

Raoul Bellanova moved to Bergamo this week, but was not in the squad to face his former teammates, along with Teun Koopmeiners and Ademola Lookman, plus injured Sead Kolasinac, Rafael Toloi, Giorgio Scalvini and Gianluca Scamacca. Toro missed Nikola Vlasic, Pietro Pellegri, Gvidas Gineitis and Perr Schurrs after their 2-2 draw with Milan.

There was a protest before kick-off outside the stadium with thousands of fans calling for President Urbano Cairo to sell the club.

Valentin Lazaro fired over under pressure from Davide Zappacosta when sent through by Duvan Zapata, while Vanja Milinkovic-Savic used a foot to deny Ederson from close range.

Mateo Retegui sprung the offside trap and got around the goalkeeper, but was pushed wide enough his finish was deflected onto the side-netting.

It was only a warning, as Retegui opened the scoring with a bullet header in off the underside of the crossbar from the Davide Zappacosta cross.

It didn’t take long for Torino to respond, as Che Adams sent Ivan Ilic through to dink it over the on-rushing goalkeeper in a well-worked team move.

Milinkovic-Savic had his gloves stung by Charles De Ketelaere and Zappacosta blasted the rebound over the bar, but Torino had a huge opportunity in first half stoppages.

Marco Carnesecchi got his timing all wrong and Lazaro floated a cross in for Duvan Zapata’s free header, but Isak Hien got back for the desperate goal-line clearance.

Within seconds of the restart, Milinkovic-Savic got down to palm a De Ketelaere finish off the line.

However, it was the Granata who turned it around on the counter-attack. Ilic rolled across a long Saul Coco ball over the top, Carnesecchi made the one-handed save on Duvan Zapata, pushing it into the path of impressive Che Adams.

La Dea were pouring forward, as Milinkovic-Savic got down for a one-handed save on Ederson’s angled drive. From the resulting corner, Retegui flicked on the Berat Djimsiti header to thump the crossbar, with Milinkovic-Savic parrying the Mario Pasalic follow-up.

It remained wide open, as Carnesecchi made a sensational double save on Duvan Zapata and then the Adams rebound.

Moments later, De Ketelaere saw his header bounce off the frame of the goal at the other end. Nicolò Zaniolo also hit the side-netting with a scuffed finish and had penalty appeals, but he seemed to handle before Saul Coco.

Zaniolo also accidentally got in the way of Alberto Manzoni’s shot on the Samardzic counter-attack.

Deep into stoppages, VAR showed Lazaro’s clumsy sliding tackle got more of Cassa’s shin than the ball and a penalty was awarded. Mario Pasalic stepped up and saw his kick saved by Torino hero Milinkovic-Savic.
