Teams in Serie A will be allowed to name fifteen players on the bench in their matchday squads next season rather than twelve.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who report that the league has officially confirmed the change to the regulations.

Apart from the players included in the starting eleven, teams have been allowed to call up twelve players to the squads for Serie A fixtures over the past seasons.

However, the league has decided to increase that amount to allow an additional three players to be called up, a change which could allow younger players from clubs’ youth sectors to be included in matchday squads.

The league is aiming to allow clubs to dip into their full squads more during what will be a condensed and hectic season due to the winter World Cup, and also to make it easier for young players to get first-team opportunities.
