Serie A will have five teams in next season’s Champions Leagur after it secured one of the two extra spots with their performances across the three European competitions.
While there was no Italian representation in the quarter-final of Europe’s biggest competition this season, they did have three teams at the same stage of the Europa League, as well as one in the Europa Conference League last eight.
Their chances of success were boosted by Roma drawing Milan, ensuring one of them would be in the semi-finals, which turned out to be Daniele De Rossi’s side after a convincing 3-1 aggregate victory.
Atalanta’s surprise win over Liverpool, also by a 3-1 margin on aggregate, massively helped the cause, as well as denting England’s hopes of a spot, which were further impacted by Manchester City and Arsenal’s exit from the Champions League and West Ham’s from the Conference League.
Added to Fiorentina’s defeat of Viktoria Plzeň in that competition, and Serie A are home and dry for one of the extra spots in the soon-to-be expanded 36-side Champions League.
Amazingly, they could have six sides if Roma or Atalanta win the Europa League but fail to finish inside the top four at home – they currently sit fifth and sixth respectively.
