Serie A round up: Juventus win Derby d’Italia, AC Milan sack Ganz | OneFootball

AC Milan decided to sack head coach Maurizio Ganz after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Sampdoria on Saturday. While Milan’s struggles continued, there were victories for the two title protagonists, Roma and Juventus.

Here, we round up all of the action from matchday eight of the Serie A season.

Fiorentina 3-0 Como

Fiorentina swept past Como on Saturday to claim a third consecutive victory. After playing out a goalless first half, the hosts moved in front within three minutes of the restart. Verónica Boquete struck the ball home from the penalty spot after substitute Alexandra Jóhannsdóttir had been tripped.

Fiorentina went on to score two goals in three minutes to wrap up the three points. First, Miriam Longo fired in at the near post, before Zsanett Kaján drilled a left-foot strike into the top corner. The home side remain in third place, while Como are six points further back in fourth position.

AC Milan 1-1 Sampdoria

AC Milan made an impressive start, taking an early lead thanks to Kosovare Asllani’s seventh-minute effort. However, they gifted Sampdoria the chance to level from the spot in the second period. After being fouled by Julie Piga, Taty picked herself up to dispatch the subsequent penalty.

With Milan unable to find a winner, they played out a second straight 1-1 draw, continuing their poor run of form. The result proved to be the final straw for the Milan hierarchy, who opted to dismiss Ganz following a run of one win in six league matches. Davide Corti succeeds Ganz, stepping up from his role with the club’s Primavera side.

Sassuolo 0-2 Roma

Roma maintained their 100 percent start to the Serie A season with a successful trip to the Stadio Enzo Ricci. Manuela Giugliano broke the deadlock in the 15th minute, slotting past Solène Durand to score for the fourth consecutive game.

In the second period, Saki Kumagai netted her third goal of the Serie A season to effectively wrap up three more points for the reigning champions. Roma will now turn their focus to Thursday’s Champions League clash with Ajax.

Juventus 5-0 Inter

Juventus made light work of Inter in Sunday’s Derby d’Italia. The hosts raced into a two-goal lead within five minutes of the first whistle. Arianna Caruso’s left-foot shot found its way past Francesca Durante, before Julia Grosso made it two with an unstoppable strike into the top corner. Lindsey Thomas rose high to head home from a deep free-kick in the 52nd minute. Thomas then drove the ball in at the near post to add her second and Juventus’ fourth.

There was still time for Cristiana Girelli to round off the scoring, dispatching a spot-kick after being fouled by Flaminia Simonetti. The victory keeps Juventus three points behind Roma, while Inter are in fifth place with 13 points to their name.

Pomigliano 2-1 Napoli

Pomigliano picked up their first win of the season after they beat Napoli in Sunday’s derby. Ana Lucía Martínez put the hosts in front in the 27th minute when she guided the ball home from Laura Bourgoin’s cut-back. Napoli hit back in the opening stages of the second half, with Giulia Giacobbo producing a sublime strike from the edge of the box.

The contest looked set to end in a draw until the referee awarded a penalty in the final minute of stoppage time. Claudia Mauri’s clumsy challenge allowed Iris Rabot to stroke the ball home from the spot to spark scenes of jubilation. The result movies Pomigliano four points clear of basement side Napoli, who are still yet to pick up a point this season.
