Speaking after Fiorentina’s UEFA Europa Conference League final defeat to West Ham United, Nordin Amrabat, the brother of midfielder Sofyan Amrabat, insisted that the Moroccan desires a move to Spain this summer amid interest from Barcelona.

Amrabat has been heavily linked with a move to Barça since the January transfer window. A transfer was understood to be close during the winter, but Fiorentina decided to block the operation.

With Sergio Busquets set to depart the club, the Blaugrana need a defensive midfielder to fill the void that will be left. And even though Amrabat is not a like-for-like replacement, the 26-year-old continues to remain an option at Can Barça.

When asked if Sofyan would be joining West Ham United in the summer, his brother Nordin replied (h/t Fabrizio Romano): “No, he wants to go to the top and his desire is to play in Spain. At Barcelona, he is high on the list but you know Barça’s financial situation.”

As Nordin Amrabat mentions, Barcelona’s financial situation is not the healthiest. Even though they have received approval on their economic viability plan from La Liga, the Blaugrana can only operate under the 40% rule in the market and need player sales first to bring in new ones.

Amrabat, for his part, is entering the final year of his contract with Fiorentina and could be available for a bargain in the summer.

However, Xavi Hernandez & co. continue to prioritise a move for Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad as the ideal replacement for Busquets. But with his €60 million release clause likely to make a transfer difficult, a move for Amrabat cannot be completely ruled out at this point.
