Mattia Viti cancelled out the Mattia Zaccagni free kick, but Lazio get the point they needed for the Europa League against doomed Sassuolo.

The result at the Stadio Olimpico was largely irrelevant, as the Aquile were practically guaranteed to finish seventh and the Neroverdi already relegated. It was still an emotional evening, as Sven Goran Eriksson was celebrated by the crowd, having recently announced his terminal cancer diagnosis.

Nicolò Casale was suspended with Patric injured, while Matheus Henrique sat out a ban for Sassuolo with Domenico Berardi and Samu Castillejo sidelined.

Alessio Cragno came flying out to parry at the feet of Elseid Hysaj from a Mario Gila through ball, then the goalkeeper made a spectacular fingertip save to keep out the Daichi Kamada toe-poke on Luca Pellegrini’s cross.

Lazio finally broke through with a Mattia Zaccagni free kick from distance, which split the Sassuolo wall and bounced right in front of Cragno to enter the bottom corner.

It didn’t last long, because the Kristian Thorstvedt free kick was flicked on by Alessio Romagnoli for Mattia Viti to tap in at the back post.

There were chances for both sides to win it with Cragno sticking out a foot to deny Ciro Immobile and Armand Lauriente drilling just wide.
