Denzel Dumfries cancelled out the Daichi Kamada goal to avoid an Inter defeat on the Scudetto celebration day, but it damages Lazio’s hopes in Europe.
There was a very odd atmosphere at San Siro, because while the Nerazzurri would be presented with the Serie A trophy after the final whistle, the crowd also knew owners Suning were on the verge of having the club repossessed over an unpaid loan to Oaktree within the next 48 hours. Meanwhile, the Aquile were battling for sixth place and had Ivan Provedel back two months after spraining his ankle, but Alessio Romagnoli was suspended.
Marcus Thuram was sent through by Lautaro Martinez in the third minute and tried to nutmeg Provedel, but the goalkeeper managed to use his foot to parry.
Taty Castellanos nutmegged Francesco Acerbi to get the ball in the net moments later, but VAR confirmed that the striker was offside on the Daichi Kamada assist.
Yann Sommer needed a one-handed save on Castellanos following a misplaced Acerbi pass, while Provedel on his comeback needed two sensational reaction saves on Federico Dimarco efforts in quick succession.
Lazio took the lead when Kamada unleashed a left-foot scorcher from distance into the near bottom corner, just beyond the fingertips of Sommer.
Mattia Zaccagni hit the side-netting after a strong Kamada run and Inter had penalty appeals in first half stoppages, but Matias Vecino slipped over and Lautaro Martinez ran into him while looking at the ball.
Provedel made another fine save on the Nicolò Barella header and on the resulting corner Lautaro Martinez nodded onto the base of the far upright.
Vecino’s angled drive skimmed the back post and Matteo Guendouzi also drilled off target, but Benjamin Pavard sprinted back for a decisive sliding tackle as Castellanos was going clear on the counter-attack at the 85th minute.
It proved pivotal, as moments later Inter equalised with an Alexis Sanchez free kick floated to the back post for Denzel Dumfries to out-jump Adam Marusic in a powerful header.
