Real Madrid and Napoli face off in a fascinating clash at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium later today.

The Serie A side boasts of some of the biggest names in world football, and ironically, some of Real Madrid’s top transfer targets.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is one of the young stars Los Blancos have their eyes on as a long-term target. However, they could be looking at Victor Osimhen in the near future, if recent reports from AS (via SPORT) are to be believed.

On the Merengues’ radar

According to the Spanish outlet, Real Madrid no longer see it as feasible to operate without an established number nine.

Karim Benzema’s departure hit the club hard, and while Joselu has done well as a deputy, Florentino Perez wishes to sign a top-quality number nine next summer.

Kylian Mbappe is the team’s prime option on that front. If the deal for the Frenchman falls apart, however, Victor Osimhen is Real Madrid’s Plan B.

The Nigerian striker has established himself as one of the best in the business in recent years. Last season, he scored a staggering 26 goals and four assists in Serie A alone en route to Napoli’s title-winning run.

Shrouded in controversy

Earlier this summer, Napoli were confident of securing Osimhen’s future with a new contract and placed him as one of the irreplaceable cogs in the team.

Now, suddenly, the situation is far from clear. A recent controversy over the club’s social media posting a video mocking Osimhen has created a ruckus in Naples.

A renewal is far from certain now, more so if Real Madrid push their interest.

Needless to say, Napoli’s group-stage games against Real Madrid could well be informal auditions for the 24-year-old striker. All eyes will be on him later tonight.
