Juventus have finished the regular season with a seven-point lead at the top of the Serie A Femminile table after they put six past AC Milan in Sunday’s dominant win. Their title rivals, Inter Milan, dropped a couple of points in an eight-goal thriller with Lazio, which saw Martina Piemonte net four goals in just over half an hour.
Here, we round up all the five matches that took place on the final weekend before the league splits in two.
Sassuolo recorded their third win in five Serie A Femminile matches in Sunday’s away meeting with Sampdoria. Daniela Sabatino nodded home in the 26th minute to put the visitors in the ascendancy. Elena Pisani did her utmost to keep out Sabatino’s far-post header, but she could not prevent the ball from crossing the line.
After going into the break with a narrow advantage, Sassuolo doubled their lead through Lana Clelland’s 73rd-minute effort. The 32-year-old drove into the left side of the box, before she thumped an unstoppable strike into the top corner to seal all three points. Sassuolo finished the weekend in eighth position, while Sampdoria dropped to the bottom of the table following Napoli’s win over Como.
Second-placed Inter gave up a two-goal lead on two occasions in their thrilling away clash with Lazio. Martina Tomaselli required just two minutes to open the scoring, beating Kerttu Karresmaa with the aid of a wicked deflection. Henrietta Csiszár wasted little time in adding a second, driving the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box. After going into the break with a two-goal deficit, Lazio grabbed a foothold courtesy of Martina Piemonte’s 62nd-minute effort. The former AC Milan forward showed great determination to beat Marija Milinković to Alice Benoît’s dangerous delivery into the box, steering the ball past the helpless Cecilía Rán Rúnarsdóttir.
Inter trail seven points adrift of Serie A Femminile leaders Juventus following the latest round of results.
Just moments later, Piemonte produced a sublime first-time finish to hook the ball into the top corner from Martina Zanoli’s drilled cross. Despite seeing their lead wiped out, Inter scored two goals in three minutes to wrestle back control of the contest. Lina Magull fired the ball home from outside the box to restore the away’s side advantage. Beatrice Merlo then tucked the ball in from close range to net her second league goal of the season.
The visitors appeared to be heading towards all three points until Piemonte took it upon herself to spark a late fightback. First, the forward neatly turned in the box to drive a left-foot shot past Rúnarsdóttir. The 27-year-old then found the all-important equaliser in the third minute of stoppage time. Like her third goal, Piemonte collected the ball with her back to goal, before she shifted it out of her feet to create the room to stroke a right-foot shot out of the reach of the Inter goalkeeper. As a result of her outstanding display, Piemonte took her tally to nine Serie A Femminile goals for the season, while she also dented Inter’s title aspirations.
Juventus made light work of their latest away Serie A Femminile fixture against Milan. The visitors bagged four first-half goals to wrap up the victory before the break. Cristiana Girelli rose high at the near post to head home the opener from Lisa Boattin’s in swinging corner. Boattin then put her own name on the scoresheet, tapping home from Barbara Bonansea’s squared pass. As the half moved past the half-hour, Girelli added her second from the penalty spot after Paulina Krumbiegel was brought down in the box.
There was still plenty of time in the first half for Girelli to complete her hat-trick. The experienced forward pounced on a looping ball to calmly nod it into the far corner. Juventus maintained their four-goal lead until they scored two late goals to take their tally to six. Valentina Bergamaschi produced a simple finish to net her fourth league goal of the season. Amalie Vangsgaard then lashed the ball home from the left side of the box. Despite the defeat, Milan held on to fifth place, securing them a spot in the Championship group.
Napoli’s eventful home clash against Como produced six goals, although only one of those arrived in the first half. Roma loanee Zara Kramžar guided the ball home from Ramona Petzelberger’s cross to give Como a narrow lead at the break. However, Napoli made a lightning-quick start to the second period to turn the game in their favour. Gloria Slišković netted the equaliser from close range, before Marija Banušić put her side in front with a superb solo effort.
Como appeared to have wrestled back some control when Kramžar restored parity in the 77th minute. As it proved, Napoli used that setback as motivation to score two late goals. Maja Jelčić drove the ball into the bottom corner after Natalie Muth had shown great determination in the build-up. Ginevra Moretti then slotted home the game’s final goal to wrap up all three crucial points. Napoli have now moved off the bottom of the table and into ninth position, while sixth-placed Como will have to settle for a spot in the relegation group.
Roma suffered another setback in the defence of their Serie A Femminile title. The reigning champions had to settle for a goalless draw in their away meeting with Fiorentina. The two sides mustered just one shot on target apiece, suggesting that a point was probably a fair result. Roma are now 10 points adrift of leaders Juventus, while Fiorentina are seven points further back in fourth position.
