Empoli and Cagliari shared the spoils in a disappointing stalemate that is far better for the Sardinians than the hosts.
The hosts were without a Serie A victory since December 8 and fresh off their midweek 3-0 Coppa Italia semi-final defeat to Bologna. Emmanuel Gyasi and Jacopo Fazzini were suspended, goalkeeper Marco Silvestri fractured his finger, joining Youssef Maleh, Ardian Ismajli, Nicolas Haas, Szymon Zurkowski, Saba Sazonov and Pietro Pellegri on the treatment table. The Sardinians had broken free of the drop zone with a 3-0 victory over Monza and had a full squad available.
Liberato Cacace failed to make the most of an inspired Sebastiano Esposito pass, while Liam Henderson’s sweep from the edge of the area was deflected wide.
Henderson tried to score directly from the corner flag, forcing Elia Caprile to flap it away from the far post, while Roberto Piccoli tested Devis Vasquez.

Cagliari went very close straight after the restart with a Nicolas Viola free kick that skimmed the near top corner, hitting the wrong side of the net.
Junior Sambia also went close from a set play at the other end, his ferocious free kick whistling just wide of the upright.
Empoli should’ve scored on 64 minutes when Sebastiano Esposito surged through the middle and was preparing to shoot, but his teammate Liberato Cacace stole it off his foot to go for goal instead, forcing a save from Caprile.
Caprile also made a great one-handed save on Ehibue’s header, but it wouldn’t have counted because the cross had already gone out of play.
Christian Kouame went off injured and Goglichidze’s cross-shot tested Caprile at the near post.
