Salernitana have rehired Davide Nicola, less than 48 hours after sacking him.

The Serie A minnows lost 8-2 to Atalanta at the weekend, prompting owner Danilo Iervolino to give Nicola the boot.

It’s not unusual for Italian teams to bring back bosses, they’ve previously sacked as coaches are placed on gardening leave rather than having their contract terminated.

This means they cannot work for another club until they’ve negotiated their release from the contract.

It appears that Nicola pleaded with Salernitana to give him another chance, as confirmed with a statement on his Instagram account.

“I want to tell you the truth. I received a call from President Iervolino yesterday,” wrote the coach.

“I apologised, taking responsibility for a performance that was not adequate and the resulting heavy defeat. I believe in this team and its men and this great club.

“I pleaded strongly with the President reconsider his decision, to let him know he’s dealing with a human soul that has a deep sensitivity and strongly wants to build a unique style of football. I love Salerno and strongly believe in this project.

“I thank the President for calling me; this means that our new football operation is created with passion and from the heart, and I want to repay his trust with all my love. I thank sporting director Morgan De Sanctis for the mediation. Without him, this operation would not be possible. We have weeks of hard work ahead to reach our target.

“Let’s start again with togetherness and create another story in the history of football, giving the Granata fans the same passion and sense of belonging they always show us.

“This is Salerno, this is Salernitana, much more than just a football club.”

Nicola kept Crotone in Serie A on the final day of the season in 2017 after the side had spent the entire campaign in the relegation zone. Salernitana sit in a relatively comfortable 16th place in the table, nine points above the drop zone.
