Serie A | Bologna 1-1 Juventus: Exciting draw creates crazy fight for fourth

Remo Freuler replied to the Khephren Thuram opener, as Bologna and Juventus share the spoils to make the fight for fourth place even harder, with four teams in a one-point radius.

This was a head-to-head for fourth, as the Bianconeri leapfrogged their rivals last weekend. Dan Ndoye, Emil Holm and Estanis Pedrola missed out, with Santiago Castro again not fully fit to start. Juve had Kenan Yildiz suspended after his red card against Monza, with Dusan Vlahovic, Teun Koopmeiners, Federico Gatti, Lloyd Kelly, Arek Milik, Gleison Bremer and Juan Cabal out too, so Nicoló Savona had to be a makeshift central defender.

Juventus broke the deadlock early on when Andrea Cambiaso was allowed to cut inside from the right and spread it to Khephren Thuram, his strike from just outside the area squirming underneath Lukasz Skorupski for a goalkeeping howler.

Nico Gonzalez failed to get on the end of a Cambiaso pass when clear on goal, then Thijs Dallinga ballooned over from a great position, although he might’ve been offside.

Riccardo Orsolini tried to curl in directly from the corner flag, forcing a difficult Michele Di Gregorio fingertip save, but Weston McKennie ran a huge risk when bundling into the back of Remo Freuler inside the penalty area, the referee waving play on. Bologna were also enraged when Savona handled outside the area, but as his arm was behind him, the referee assumed it was involuntary.

As the hosts were pouring forward, Juve had the ball in the net with Nico Gonzalez, but he was offside on the Kolo Muani flick from the long Di Gregorio ball.

Kolo Muani had a great chance moments later when found unmarked at the back post on the Thuram floated ball, but completely mistimed the volley.

Cambiaso had the ball in the net on 50 minutes, but again the offside flag had gone up for the strike on the turn, even though VAR showed it was a matter of inches.

Instead, Bologna got their equaliser as Cambiaghi stood up a cross from the left by-line, nodded down by Dallinga for Freuler, whose finish from 10 yards took a deflection off Renato Veiga on the way through. It was the veteran midfielder’s first goal of the season.

Nico Gonzalez saw his strike on the turn smothered by Skorupski, while Juan Miranda and Cambiaso both limped off.

Cambiaghi’s volley was charged down from the edge of the box, but Juve had another big chance when Kolo Muani went over far too easily against Charalampos Lykogiannis, then McKennie found Alberto Costa, who slipped at the crucial moment when he was ready to sweep home from eight yards.

Bologna threatened in stoppages when a corner found Cambiaghi for the shot charged down, then Lewis Ferguson fired the rebound over from a tricky angle.
