Paris Saint-Germain defender Sergio Ramos has admitted that he initially regretted leaving Real Madrid.

The legendary Spanish centre-back moved to Parc des Princes on a free transfer in 2021 after spending around 16 years with Los Blancos, leaving behind an irreplaceable legacy.

However, Los Blancos seamlessly moved on from Ramos, winning the La Liga and Champions League the following season.

By contrast, Ramos endured a troubled start to life at PSG, spending almost half of the last season on the sidelines with injury problems.

There were also rumours that PSG were disappointed with the Spaniard’s situation and considering terminating his contract.

He also lost his place in the Spanish national team despite being the highest appearance holder in La Roja’s history.

Ramos claims that all those struggles led him to ponder whether it was the right decision to leave Madrid.

“Leaving Real Madrid was obviously a very big change,” Ramos told the UEFA website.

“My goal is always to continue winning. I won a lot with Real Madrid, but I thought this was a good opportunity for a change of scenery – to try to help a team like PSG.

“At first, having taken that leap, everything went wrong. I got injured, had a hard time recovering and adapting to the new system, to the new team and new coach.

“You begin to doubt whether or not you’ve done the right thing. But my career has been defined by consistency, perseverance and hard work. You keep fighting and it will give things more meaning in the future.”

Ramos has come into his own this season, becoming a regular in defence under Christopher Galtier.

The 36-year-old has made 30 appearances in all competitions this term, helping Les Parisiens stay at the top of Ligue 1 and progress to the knockout stage of the Champions League.

Ramos is expected to start against Bayern Munich tonight in the round of 16 first leg at Parc des Princes.

PSG’s recent struggles have raised doubts over their chances, but they must leave no stone unturned to overcome the German giants and also in the quest for the long-evading UCL glory.
