According to L’Équipe, Sérgio Conceição is seriously considering the offer from Olympique de Marseille to become their next manager. It’s a situation that after seven successful years at FC Porto, the Portuguese head coach had not initially been interested in.
Conceição wants to compete in the Champions League and is suspected to have believed that a club of that level would come calling for him. However, offers from clubs like Barcelona and AC Milan have not materialised, with both teams turning to other options.
Instead, Marseille have arrived at his door after their worst season since the 2015/16 campaign, without any European football to speak of, and a squad in need of a serious rebuild. And slowly, the Marseille opportunity has begun to hold his interest.
Marseille’s preference would be for the negotiations to be sorted by the end of this week, but Conceição is under no pressure to act quickly. The manager remains under contract at Porto until 2028 after signing a recent extension.
However, there is reportedly a clause in his contract that would allow him to walk for free since it was a deal signed under the previous president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa who recently lost an election to ex-Marseille manager André Villas-Boas.
Still, there would be personal details to sort out between Porto and their current manager before he would be allowed to leave, although it’s suspected that he’ll not ask the club for financial compensation.
