Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets is set for a brief spell on the sidelines after sustaining an injury during the La Liga clash against Sevilla last night.

The Blaugrana captain didn’t last longer than five minutes on the field after suffering an apparent ankle sprain which left him in pain.

Diario AS claims that Busquets will remain out for around two weeks, meaning he will likely miss the Europa League clash against Manchester United, with the first leg set to be played at Camp Nou on February 16.

The news will be a huge setback for the Blaugrana, with Busquets a central figure for Xavi’s side this season. His consistency has also helped Barca soar to the top of La Liga.

While his future remains the subject of speculation, he has kept his performance levels intact, proving time and again he is the best holding midfielder in Europe.

However, the Spanish midfielder’s absence didn’t affect Barca too much as they recorded an emphatic 3-0 victory over Jorge Sampaoli’s side at Camp Nou.

His replacement Franck Kessie made a significant impact by setting up Jordi Alba’s goal. The Ivorian midfielder has suffered from a lack of game time this season, but the performance against Sevilla will more likely warrant a significant role for him in the upcoming games.

Frenkie de Jong switched to the pivot position in the wake of Busquets’ injury, and the Dutchman also produced an emphatic display.

Barca hold an eight-point lead at the top of the table, and they will face Villarreal in their next fixture before meeting Man United.
