It has not been long since Sergi Roberto renewed his contract with the club until 2024. In a recent interview with Barça TV, the midfielder analyzed his career and current situation at the club.

In a conversation with journalist Marc Brau, Roberto expressed his joy at being at the club he considers his home. “I am very happy to be here, to be at home. My family is also doing well and I am enjoying myself on the pitch once again – it couldn’t be better,” he said.

Roberto’s recent contract renewal came with a pay cut, something he readily accepted. “As in and out of football, I have always been the best person possible, helping my people, my friends, and my family. And in this case, I am at the club of my life, and of course, I will always help in whatever is needed,” he said.

“Now the economic situation is not the best, and it has not been difficult for me to help the club. The conditions are very different from before,” he added.

One of the main reasons for Roberto’s prolonged stay at Barcelona is the trust and confidence he receives from his current coach Xavi.

The former Barcelona midfielder has always spoken highly of Roberto, even before becoming his coach. “He was my idol since I was little, then a great friend and a great teammate, and now my coach. What he says about me is a source of pride,” Roberto said.

“I am proud that the coach puts me in the eleven and in different positions according to the needs of the team. It’s a source of pride. I’m here to help the team, my teammates. And this versatility has kept me here for so many years,” he further said.

Roberto also spoke about two other coaches who have had a significant impact on his career – Pep Guardiola and Luis Enrique.

The latter was the one who suggested Roberto play as a right-back, a position he has excelled in. “We were at the gym one day, and we had an informal conversation. He told me he’d been thinking and I told him that it was open, that I wanted to try it.

“We tried it anyway, and it’s not going well, but I think that with your conditions, you can adapt perfectly,” Luis Enrique had said at the time.

The move has since worked out well with Sergi Roberto playing a vital role for Barcelona and is not expected to leave Camp Nou anytime until 2024.
