Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has his sights set on joining Arsenal during this summer’s transfer window, Italian publication Corriere dello Sport claim (page 17).

The Serbian is regarded as one of the best box-to-box midfielders in Europe. He has had another fine campaign with six goals and eight assists from 27 appearances in all competitions.

His current deal with Lazio expires in June 2024, but it is claimed that the midfielder prefers to leave the Serie A outfit this summer rather than see out his contract.

Corriere dello Sport add that Arsenal are his ‘favourite’ destination as they have taken the ‘most convinced’ steps. The midfielder was not tempted by a move last summer.

Lazio president Claudio Lolito has repeatedly said that the club value him at €100m, and that is now a ‘distant memory’. The hopes of receiving €50-60m could now be a mirage.

Milinkovic-Savic would be a good acquisition for Arsenal

Milinkovic-Savic has been constantly linked with a Premier League move over the past few years but nothing has materialised beyond the transfer speculation.

Lolito has also put off suitors with his asking price but the scenario could be different this summer with Milinkovic-Savic determined to move on from the club.

The Serbian has his sights on a bigger challenge away from Rome and reports claim that his decision is ‘irreversible’ regardless of where Lazio finish in Serie A.

In our opinion, Milinkovic-Savic would be a good acquisition for Arsenal and could be a strong competitor to Granit Xhaka for the number eight position next season.

Despite the mid-season outlay on Jorginho, the Gunners need another young defensive midfielder to compete with Thomas Partey but they must also focus on adding more creativity.

Aside from goal involvements, Milinkovic-Savic also provides much more with his physical presence and impressive defensive attributes from the centre of the park.

He has won over seven aerial and ground duels per game in Serie A this term. He also averages two tackles and one interception and likes to draw fouls from the opposition.

It remains to be seen whether Arsenal make an approach to sign him this summer. In our view, a package of around €40m would be ideal to secure his services from Lazio.
