Sepúlveda brace against Club América sends Cruz Azul to semifinals

MEXICO CITY — Cruz Azul earned a 2-1 win against Club América, advancing 2-1 on aggregate, in the second leg of their quarterfinals series as the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup continued on Tuesday at Estadio Olímpico Universitario in Mexico City, Mexico.
Ángel Sepúlveda opened the scoring in the 12’ with a left-footed strike in the penalty area into the right-side netting. Mateusz Bogusz delivered the through ball to collect the assist.
Ignacio Rivero struck on goal in the 30’ off a Cruz Azul corner kick but was denied by Club América goalkeeper Luis Ángel Malagón.
Malagón delivered another save in the 33’ as Bogusz tried his luck from outside the box.
Alejandro Zendejas shot on goal in the 37’ but could not place the ball past Cruz Azul goalkeeper Kevin Mier.
Érick Sánchez had a look inside the penalty area in the 45+2’ but was just off-target.
Álvaro Fidalgo equalized in the 57’ with a right-footed finish inside the penalty area. Kevin Álvarez delivered the service across the penalty area to earn the assist.
Sepúlveda delivered the match-winner in the 85’, extending his lead in the top scorer race to six goals, with a header inside the penalty area off a service from Ignacio Rivero.
Cruz Azul advances to the semifinals for the first time since the 2022 edition. La Maquina will face fellow Liga MX side Tigres UANL, and the winner on aggregate will earn a spot in the final.
