Despite being a Brazilian by birth, Marcos Senna became wrapped up in Spanish culture and ended up becoming adopted by the national team after being granted citizenship in Spain in 2006.
Before making history with Spain, winning the 2008 Euros and becoming a Villarreal mainstay, the midfielder felt the taste of being a Brazilian champion for Corinthians in 1999 and subsequently won the 2000 Club World Cup.
As it turns out, Senna still follows the football played in Brazil and has some heavy praise for the current Flamengo side.
In an interview with Goal Brasil, Senna claimed only his 1999 Corinthians side and the 1996 Palmeiras outfit could compete with Flamengo today.
“I don’t remember seeing a team do that in Brazil, with the kind of superiority that they had last year and then started with again this year.
“We (Corinthians in 1999) would be one of the few teams that would be fighting side-by-side with this Flamengo.
“What I remember is the feeling that nobody could beat us. The trust was very great, that group was wonderful. I was privileged to have participated with that team.”
Flamengo won a total of five titles over the course of 95 days, including the Copa Libertadores and Brasileirão in 2019 followed by the Recopa Sudamericana, Taça Guanabara, and Supercopa do Brasil titles in 2020.
In addition, Flamengo started their 2020 Copa Libertadores campaign with two decisive victories prior to the coronavirus stoppage.
