Sell or keep? Steven Sessegnon at Fulham as contract expiry looms

Steven Sessegnon’s Fulham career has not progressed as he would have liked in the last few years which has led to both parties heading towards a dilemma about the 21-year-old’s future.

Sessegnon impressed in a loan spell at Bristol City in 2020/21 and he was retained by the Cottagers this summer following their relegation from the Premier League.

The Londoner though has not been able to force his way into a matchday squad under Marco Silva and has been mainly involved with the U23 side in Premier League 2 this term.

With the 21-year-old’s contract coming to end this summer we discuss whether Fulham should sell or keep Steven Sessegnon:

Sell

The Cottagers would recoup a transfer fee if Sessegnon is to leave at the end of his contract due to his youth.

The full back is evidently not in Marco Silva’s plans and his versatility and potential, verified by his experience as an England youth international, could be better utilised elsewhere.

With Denis Odoi, Kenny Tete and Cyrus Christie are more senior to him in the pathway to the right back berth at Craven Cottage making Sessegnon’s hopes of breaking into Silva’s plans are extremely thin. It feels like a departure would be best for both parties.

Keep

From a financial perspective there could be value to enhance in Sessegnon’s potential sale. To increase that value Sessegnon would need to prove his worth in senior football and the only way he is going to do that in the current situation is via a loan move.

If Fulham trigger their option to extend his contract until the summer of 2023 before sending the 21-year-old out on loan for the second half of this season, they give themselves a chance of increasing Sessegnon’s standing in the transfer market.

Providing more security over his future could see Sessegnon kick on after the turn of the year to further prove his credentials at Championship level.
