The quality that emerged from Ajax’s academy in the 1990s is roundly revered, and one of the defining moments of that period occurred on 28 March, 1993.
Clarence Seedorf had already started to make an impression with Louis van Gaal’s side but his goal away at Vitesse Arnhem alerted the wider public to his ability.
The midfielder came on as a half-time substitute with the Amsterdam side 2-0 down at the Nieuw Monnikenhuize.
In the 67th minute, Seedorf played a nice wall pass before unleashing a fierce, low drive past the flat-footed Raymond van der Gouw in the Vitesse nets.
Halving Ajax’s deficit, the teenager also wrote his name into the record books as the club’s youngest goalscorer at that time at just 16 years and 361 days old.
Sweden international striker Stefan Pettersson would strike at the death to rescue a point for the visitors.
Seedorf would turn 17 five days later, before enjoying an incredible career that would see him lift four Champions Leagues with three different clubs.
The now retired 44-year-old certainly started as he meant to go on 28 years ago!
