The Panama international has been linked with a move to the Championship trio this summer following his breakout performances in the Copa América.

The defender has been out on loan with Municipal, but could be set for a move to English football this summer if an agreement can be found.

He helped Panama reach the quarter final stages of the international tournament, where they lost 5-0 to finalists Colombia.

Panama came through a group including Uruguay, the USA and Bolivia, earning six points from a possible nine.

Fariña has admitted that there have been some talks over his future, but that he has not been paying any attention to it due to his international commitments.

However, he now expects there to be further discussions, as he weighs up the best next step to take in his career.

"There has been a lot of talk about it, but I was focused on the Copa América to do something else," said Fariña, via La Red 106.1.

"It's time to return [to Municipal] and see the best options that can benefit me."

It is understood that further talks over his future will be held soon, with three Championship sides currently circling.

The 22-year-old featured in all four of Panama’s Copa América matches, playing in every minute (all stats from Fbref).

It remains to be seen what kind of fee will be needed to convince Independiente to cash in on the player this summer.

Cardiff, Burnley and Watford will all be aiming to compete at a high level in the Championship next season, with the Clarets in particular looking to fight for promotion straight back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

Edgardo Fariña’s career so far

The centre-back made a major breakthrough in his career by competing on a stage as big as the Copa América.

Fariña initially came through at senior level with Independiente, having moved to the club in 2021 from Atlético Nacional.

But he has spent the last two seasons out on loan with Universitario and Municipal, and may now never become a key first team squad member for his parent club if a move to England comes to fruition this summer.

Burnley, Cardiff and Watford will all likely be keeping a close eye on how talks go with Independiente in the coming weeks.

Breakout Copa América star could be a shrewd signing

If Fariña moves to the Championship this summer then he may need to be given some time to adapt to his new surroundings, as it’s a big culture change to make for a player.

But he now has experience competing against top stars like Darwin Núñez and Norwich City’s Josh Sargent.

His performances for Panama this summer suggest he could be ready to make that step up to a Championship level.

If he can make a smooth transition to English football, then this could prove a very smart move for whichever side can win the race to his signature.
