Veteran defender Dani Alves wants to stay at Barcelona at least until January as his aim is to stay fit in order to get a place in Brazil’s world cup squad, reports La Vanguardia.

Alves, 39, returned to Barcelona in November 2021, signing a short term deal until June 30, 2022. During his brief stay, the right-back has somehow managed to defy his age by scoring a goal and providing four assists in 17 games across all competitions.

With his contract expiring in a month, Barcelona have made no contacts, although the defender has publicly admitted that he wishes to continue. Speaking after Barca’s 2-0 loss at home against Villarreal in the final La Liga game of the season, he said,

“I don’t know if it will be my last game. I live in the present, I don’t think about the future,” said the defender.

“My wish is to stay at Barça but it is not up to me so I will continue to fight to continue. Until the 30th of June I am a player of the club, I will give my best to the club, to the badge and the fans.”

“I want to stay, my desire is known to everyone. I am able to compete and fight, I’m a positive person and I always try to give my best,” he added.

Contrary to the player’s wish, Barcelona are working on closing other operations. This potentially includes offloading a large bunch in order to sign new players for the next season.

And so, any renewal for Dani Alves has been put on hold at the moment. And since the player is very much aware of the happenings, La Vanguardia says he is already looking for a plan B.

Whether or not he will continue at Camp Nou is a decision that rests solely with the team. But what is certain is that the fans will, in fact, see the defender in action next season.
