Atlético Madrid traveled to the Estadio Nuevo Mirandilla for Sunday’s clash against Cádiz and walk away with all three points after a 4-1 win.
Scorers: Oblak 86′ (OG); Lemar 56′, Griezmann 70′, Correa 76′, Cunha 86′
Heading into Sunday’s match, Atlético Madrid were focused on putting their Champions League woes behind them and capitalising on Real Sociedad’s earlier slip-up.
As such, Diego Simeone’s men lunged forward but Cádiz shut down virtually every threat in the first 45 minutes. Attempts from the likes of Yannick Carrasco and Antoine Griezmann couldn’t find the target.
The best chance fell to a wide-open Luis Suárez just before the break when the ball dropped right in his path but the Uruguayan’s attempt went wayward.
The flow of play shifted in favour of the hosts after the break with Anthony Lozano coming inches away from finding the opener.
Over time, however, Atleti continued to overload Cádiz with pressure and Thomas Lemar’s back-post header made things 1-0.
After that, the floodgates were open and goals from Griezmann, Ángel Correa and Matheus Cunha secured three points.
Cádiz did manage to get themselves on the scoresheet after an interesting own-goal from Jan Oblak late in the game.
With the result, Atleti now sit second in the table while Cádiz are 17th.
