Nico Schulz made a €25.5m move to Dortmund over the summer but has only made five Bundesliga appearances this season.
A foot injury in September halted a promising start at the club and Schulz hasn’t yet recovered his form.
The defender was pulled off at half-time of Dortmund’s lacklustre 3-3 draw with Paderborn on Friday, with his side down 3-0 at the time.
Club official Sebastian Kehl is, though, confident Schulz will rediscover the form that made him a Bundesliga standout at Hoffenheim.
“I firmly believe in Nico. He’s a German international who has done outstandingly in recent years,” Kehl told Kicker.
“He’s incredibly dynamic and a really good guy.
“Nico himself knows that he hasn’t reached his top level here yet which has got something to do with settling in at the club and the fact that he was injured for several weeks.
“He’s working hard to get back to that level.”
Schulz is under contract at Westfalenstadion until 2024.
