Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff admits to ‘feeling really down’ after suffering a season-ending injury in March.

Longstaff enjoyed a breakthrough 2018/19 campaign for his boyhood club, making 12 appearances across all competitions.

The 21-year-old ruptured ligaments in his knee but is already on the road to recovery, and eyeing his first-team place back.

“I don’t mind the running,” he told Chronicle Live. “But it’s a mental thing and no matter who you are you will have negative thoughts

“It’s my first proper injury, thankfully healing as it should be. I have confidence to keep going and be back as soon as possible.

“I felt really down but my family kept me happy and positive. I’ve done the hard bit now and now it’s exciting to be getting fit.”

Manchester United have shown an interest in Longstaff but it’s understood that he will sign a new deal with Newcastle.
