Tottenham were prepared to sell Harry Kane to Burnley for £7 million during Sean Dyche’s Burnley tenure, the former Clarets boss has revealed.

The striker has become Spurs’ all-time goalscorer and, now England captain, will likely break Wayne Rooney’s national team record as well but struggled to break through early on in his career.

Kane’s loan spells at Norwich City and Leicester City in the 2012/13 campaign were fairly underwhelming and it seems he could have moved to Turf Moor soon after but the Clarets were unable to stump up the money needed to land him.

Speaking on a recent episode of Fozcast – The Ben Foster Podcast, Dyche revealed how close he came to signing the 29-year-old during his time as Burnley boss.

Pressed on who the biggest player he nearly signed was, he said: “Everyone sort of throws in names like this but it’s true because I met him on holiday, it’s Harry Kane.

“It was when Harry Kane had come out of. When he’d been on loan a couple of times and it hadn’t really worked for him, at Norwich City and Leicester City, he’d sort of been bit-part.

“He was in Portugal, I saw him and met his family and all that just by chance. I was chatting with him, knew him from the Millwall days. I wasn’t there but the lads there spoke really highly of him, really liked him.

“I phoned up about him but at the time I think it was Tim Sherwood immediately said ‘£7 million’ and we were in the market for about £3 million.

“I said to the board ‘look…’ and they went ‘we can’t do that’. You might have even got £5 million plus add-ons but at the time we were looking at George Boyd record signing at about £3 million so we just couldn’t do it.

“Harry Kane, I always thought he was an amazing player and I still do now.”

Dyche left Burnley late last season and is yet to take charge at a new club despite links to jobs in the Championship and elsewhere.

The Verdict

How different things could have been for Kane and perhaps Dyche and Burnley.

Though it’s been beneficial for him to come through at Tottenham, a striker of the 29-year-old’s talent would’ve had success wherever he went and could’ve been one of the Clarets greatest ever signings.

You can understand why they were unable to stump up £7 million for him at that point, however, particularly given he was fairly unproven.

Spurs fans, meanwhile, may never have forgiven Sherwood if he’d have offloaded Kane that summer.
