Everton have confirmed that Seamus Coleman has signed a new deal that will see him remain at Goodison Park for another year.

The 34-year-old has pledged his allegiance to the club, extending his time with the Toffees to a remarkable 15th season after his arrival in 2009.

The Everton captain was forced to sit out the final weeks of the last campaign after sustaining a knee injury, but his presence in the dressing room remains valuable.

His influence on the squad was crucial as the Toffees narrowly avoided relegation with a slender victory over Bournemouth on last season’s final matchday.

With manager Sean Dyche keen to avoid a repeat of the appalling last campaign, Coleman’s experience and leadership qualities will come in handy for the English manager.

The Republic of Ireland international has made 409 appearances for the Toffees since arriving from Sligo Rovers in January 2009. He has proven one of the best value-for-money signings in the Premier League era.

After committing his future to the club, Coleman said: “Everyone knows how much Everton means to me, which is why it is special to sign this new contract and continue to play for this great club.

“From the moment I joined more than 14 years ago, the support my family and I have had from our fans, and everyone around the club has been amazing.

“I never take for granted just how fortunate I am to represent Everton. That has included the honour of wearing the captain’s armband in recent years.”

Underfire Everton Chairman Bill Kenwright also expressed his delight at the new contract for the club captain.

He added: “Seamus is an Evertonian, a leader – but even more importantly, he is a sincere and genuine man. We all look to Seamus to set the best example. And he always does – on and off the pitch.”

Everton will need to bolster their ranks to improve on last season’s disappointment. They already have a couple of targets on their radar, with Leeds United forward Wilfried Gnonto of interest to the Toffees.
