Former Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman has told Parimatch that David Raya reacted “brilliantly” to his “double mistake” in Sunday’s 3-2 win over Tottenham.

“I was definitely nervous for that final 20-minute period after David Raya messed up,” Seaman said on his podcast Seaman Says, proudly sponsored by Parimatch. “You could see he got caught in two minds for Spurs’ first goal – he wanted to play the pass then saw someone had closed that avenue off, so he ended up clipping it straight to Cristian Romero.

“Even on Romero’s finish, Raya guessed which way he was shooting, which is not what you’re meant to do – you’re meant to try and wait. It was like a double mistake in that respect from Raya.

“However, I’ve got to give him credit because as much as those errors put a lot of pressure on the team when they were coasting, his performance and reaction afterwards was brilliant – he came up for every cross and dominated his area.

“That’s the sign of a good goalkeeper and it just shows that he’s a quality player. He didn’t have a great deal to do save-wise, but when he made that mistake, it was a test and he passed it with flying colours.”

Seaman then focused on Raya’s goalkeeping counterpart from Sunday’s clash and suggested that Spurs glovesman Guglielmo Vicario was too easy a target for Ben White’s role of set piece antagonism.

“Tottenham didn’t do their homework properly because they left Ben White on Vicario in the first half,” he explained. “They got someone to mark him in the second half, but it was too late – Arsenal had already scored three by that point. White was brilliant at blocking Vicario off and the goalkeeper was silly for getting involved with him – he should know better.

“Credit to Ben – he performs the role perfectly because he gives the goalkeeper a little nudge and that’s enough to block his momentum. He even tried to put Vicario’s gloves on at one point! Vicario definitely should have come out for the third goal and punched it away, but White is brilliant in these Arsenal set pieces.”

Arsenal’s next match is against AFC Bournemouth on Saturday, as they look to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League back to four points.
