Changes to 2025-26 SWPL season

The number of teams in the top-flight has been reduced for the 2025-26 SWPL season from 12 to 10.

To achieve the drop in numbers, last season’s campaign saw Spartans, Queen’s Park and Dundee United relegated to the second-tier of Scottish women’s football. Only Hamilton Academical were promoted to the top-flight.

In turn, the SWPL 2 has increased from 10 teams to 12.

SWPL teams will play each other home and away before the league splits into a top six and bottom four.

The side that finishes bottom of the SWPL will be relegated and they will be replaced by the side that finishes top of the second-tier.

Those who finish third and fourth in SWPL 2 will take part in a play-off quarter-final, where the winner will face the team that was second in SWPL 2 in a play-off semi-final. The winner will then take on whoever finishes ninth in the SWPL to determine who plays in the top-flight.
