Scott Parker has outlined the latest on Mike Tresor's short-term future at Burnley.
Scott Parker has confirmed Burnley winger Mike Tresor could win more game time at Turf Moor after impressing off the bench in the FA Cup win over Reading.
Tresor joined the Clarets in the summer of 2023 on a season-long loan move from Belgian side Genk, and his temporary move was made permanent in May 2024 after Burnley were obligated to trigger the fee included in the original deal. Due to the terms of his contract, Burnley paid out a vast sum in Championship terms of £16 million, while handing the Belgium international a five-year deal at Turf Moor.
The situation for Tresor remained somewhat of a mystery until now, given the fact he was yet to step foot onto a pitch in 2024/25 prior to Saturday, with the 25-year-old suffering multiple setbacks. A move away was mooted in the summer but nothing ended up materialising, with Tresor stuck in limbo over his future at Turf Moor after struggling in the Premier League last season.
Speaking to Dutch outlet Voetbal International, Tresor’s agent, Shallon Nkeshimana, revealed that Dutch giants Ajax came forward to try and strike a deal for the Belgian during the summer and it was a move the player wanted. However, ‘disproportionate’ demands from the Clarets prevented a deal from being completed.
After Tresor made his first appearance of the season on Saturday as a second-half substitute during Burnley's after-extra-time 3-1 win against Reading, Scott Parker has revealed the latest. The Belgian went on to have a major impact on the outcome, setting up Zian Flemming’s first goal and playing a leading role in the forward's second, too.
When Parker was asked if he expects to have Tresor available from now on, he said: “Yeah, hopefully. He's come into it today, he's come off the bench and he’s had an impact.
“As always now, we'll just keep nudging along with Mikey and hope to give him some more football.
“Mikey's not played for some time. He was out for large parts last year with a real illness and it's been a bit of a stop-start, certainly since I've been here for Mikey.
“But you can see his quality. He just probably needs to still keep getting up to speed.
“But you see that as soon as he comes in, he assists. He was around things when he's got the ball. So I was pleased to get him on the pitch and get him a feel for things again.”
Keeping hold of what he's got will be first on Parker's list of priorities in the coming weeks, but he'll also be looking to Chairman Alan Pace for the nod to go and spend some money to ensure Burnley get over the line come May.
One way to do so would be to move on fringe players, but Tresor now looks set to have a bigger part to play for the Clarets, after making only 16 appearances in the Premier League as Burnley suffered relegation to the Championship.
Tresor has not even featured in the matchday squad for any of their league fixtures, and he has not scored in any of the 20 appearances he has made for the club in all competitions and has massively underwhelmed and flattered to deceive so far.
However, he has talent. Tresor could be a good player in the Championship, having previously impressed in Belgium, so could earn himself a move if he gets his head down to impress with Burnley from here on out.
