Scott McTominay is expected to travel to Italy today to “complete his move to Napoli” as the Manchester United midfielder draws closer to a permanent exit from his boyhood club.

McTominay, 27, joined United at only five years of age and has been an ever-present figure in the senior squad since breaking through under Jose Mourinho.

Erik ten Hag is a big admirer of the Scottish international, valuing his attitude and commitment to the team, as well as his predatory instincts in the opposition’s box. He scored a career-high ten goals last season, often being deployed as an attacking substitute from the bench.

As an academy graduate, McTominay’s prospective departure this summer was seen as key to helping United balance their books from the perspective of the Premier League’s profits and sustainability rules (PSR).

The sale of academy players constitutes ‘pure profit’ and, given the acute pressure on finances at Old Trafford, the 27-year-old’s exit would be a boost to the club’s spending powers.

United had been holding out for a fee in the region of £30 million for McTominay with interest from fellow Premier League side Fulham. The Cottagers were unwilling to meet this valuation, however, and pursued alternative targets.

But where Fulham failed, Napoli have succeeded.

The Serie A side were able to get United to compromise on their asking price, agreeing a €30 million (£25.4 million) deal for McTominay with the midfielder signalling his desire to complete the move to Italy.

Dharmesh Sheth (Sky Sports) reveals Old Trafford officials were “reluctant sellers” but that the 27-year-old “want[ed] regular football”, after having begun this season back on the bench under Ten Hag. David Ornstein (The Athletic) confirms the club “could not guarantee the minutes [McTominay] wanted.”

The Athletic reporter reveals the Scottish midfielder is “expected” to travel to Italy today to finalise the €30 million move with the report by Sheth contending his “exit terms” from United were “close to being finalised.” This confirms a report relayed over the weekend of Tuesday the target date for a medical.

A report relayed by The Peoples Person had revealed McTominay was negotiating a payoff as part of his departure from Old Trafford – a clause likely driven by the fact the 27-year-old had entered the final year of his contract.

Ornstein further states that United will retain a future sell-on fee for McTominay.
