Two stunning goals from Harriet Scott and Siobhan Wilson helped Birmingham City to record a 4-0 victory over Sunderland at The Stadium of Light this afternoon.

In a game of few quality goalscoring opportunities, it was two wonderstrikes that opened the contest up and helped to seal Birmingham City’s first victory of the season in the Barclays Women’s Championship. Ashley Hodson and Jamie Finn also netted late on as the home side’s resistance crumbled.

Birmingham City started the brighter of the two sides with Wilson testing Sunderland goalkeeper Claudia Moan from distance. Libby Smith then had the ball in the back of the net but her effort was ruled out for offside.

Sunderland’s big moment of the first half fell to forward Nicki Gears. She went down in the box but the referee waved away the appeals for a penalty kick.

Jade Pennock then fired a vicious effort over the bar before Birmingham City broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time when Scott met a corner sweetly on the volley and she found the far side of the Sunderland net.

The Wearsiders almost grabbed a lifeline early in the second half when Tyler Dodds’ audacious effort from range was fumbled by visiting keeper Lucy Thomas but she claimed the ball at the second attempt. The Lady Black Cats again threatened 10 minutes later but Emily Scarr could only shoot straight at Thomas.

Birmingham City took a huge stride towards the three points when Wilson drilled an effort emphatically across goal and into the far corner to make it 2-0.

Sunderland were on the ropes and they would concede two rather sloppy goals before the final whistle sounded. First, substitute Hodson tapped the ball home after Louise Quinn’s initial header had been saved before Finn struck the game’s fourth goal after Moan had failed to claim the ball from a low cross.

Birmingham City return to action after the international break with a mouth-watering home fixture against Crystal Palace while Sunderland host Sheffield United.
