The Lionesses face The Tartan Army in their final group stage fixture at Hampden Park on Tuesday evening.
England are likely to need to win by a big scoreline to keep their hopes of representing Team GB at next summer’s Olympic Games alive. Scotland have already been relegated from League A of the UEFA Women’s Nations League and have nothing to play for. There have also been suggestions that they might go easy on England with players potentially having an interest in representing Team GB at the Olympic Games themselves.
When speaking in the pre-match press conference, England boss Wiegman said that she expects nothing other than a hard-fought contest in Glasgow.
“I understand the conversations about it (Scotland easing off) but if you have seen our group, if you have watched Scotland and know the history between the two nations, then there’s no way that they’re going to give away this game. They really want to beat England and we want to beat them of course.
“There’s such a rivalry that it’s not going to be the case. We saw that when we played in England.”
With England potentially needing to score plenty of goals against Scotland, the focus must be on attack. Wiegman wants her side to be controlled in their play and make the right decisions in the final third.
She said “I hope we go at them from the first minute but you don’t want to be erratic, we want to be controlled and play our best game. We want to create chances and get a lot of players upfront but make the right choices and stay calm at all the right moments as a team. We also want to make sure we don’t concede. If we try things in the game that don’t work, you have to try other things.
“Let’s start with where our qualities are; play a possession game, get behind the defence, create lots of chances and score goals.”
England’s UEFA Women’s Nations League fixture against Scotland kicks-off at 7.45pm on Tuesday evening.
