Scotland to take on Spain days after clash with SFA | OneFootball

Scotland will face Spain at Hampden tonight in the return leg of the World Cup qualifying fixtures.

The team will look to bounce back after some nervy results before Christmas. The Scots currently sit second in Group B, 5 points behind table leaders Spain.

Scotland started their World Cup campaign under fresh management, after failing to reach the European Championships with former coach, Shelley Kerr.

Form is yet to pick up under new boss, Pedro Martínez Losa, however. November saw the Scots scrape a draw against Ukraine before heading to Seville, where the team received an 8-0 humbling at the hands of Spain.

The Spaniards will be looking for a repeat performance on Tuesday night. The team look set to top group B comfortably and will be firm favourites heading into the Euros in England this summer. The star-studded team includes Ballon D’Or winner Alexia Putellas and young forward Amaiur Sarriegi. Sarriegi has scored 11 in the campaign so far and could top the leader board with a goal tonight.

Scotland on the other hand will be keen to showcase a competitive match at Hampden, given their heavy defeat in Seville before Christmas. And after a rocky few days up against the SFA, the Scots will have more than one point to prove.

The match comes after recent turmoil between the SWNT and the SFA.

On Tuesday night, Scotland players took to Twitter to hit out at the Scottish Football Association. The players published a series of identical tweets from their personal accounts, in which they criticised the SFA for ticketing availability ahead of tonight’s game.

The series of tweets were met with a mixed reaction from fans. While some were quick to show support, others pointed out that ticket sales for the game followed standard procedure rolled out across all national team games – including Scotland v Poland (men) earlier that month.

This was echoed by the SFA, who clarified that tickets were sold in line with demand. Still, the social media push clearly represented a deeper discontent within camp at the treatment of the women’s national team.

After a week of controversy, the pressure is on the Scots to produce a performance at Hampden this evening.
