Despite the new rules which were announced on Tuesday afternoon, Wednesday night’s fixtures can still go ahead with full capacity before the latest restrictions are enforced for the weekend.

“From December 26 inclusive for a period of three weeks, we intend to place limits on the size of public events that can take place. This does not apply to private life events such as weddings,” stated First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

“For indoor standing events the limit will be 100; for indoor seated events it will be 200; and for outdoor events it will be 500 seated or standing.

“Physical distancing of one metre will be required at events that go ahead within these limits. This will of course make sports matches, including football, effectively spectator-free over this three-week period.”

Among the high profile fixtures impacted are a Celtic-Rangers meeting on January 2 as well as a Dundee derby on the same day and an Edinburgh derby the following day before Scotland’s three-week winter break kicks in.

In addition, all Scottish Professional League clubs are required to undertake daily COVID-19 testing.
