The final round of games in Group A played out this evening, with each of the four sides still having something to play for.

Here’s how it all unfolded.

Germany find late leveller against Switzerland

Already qualified, Germany simply need to avoid defeat to Switzerland to ensure that they head into the last 16 as group winners, but needed an added time equaliser to book their place at the top.

Scorers: Ndoye 28′: Fullkrug 90+1′

They began the game on the front foot, with the electric Jamal Musiala slipping in İlkay Gündoğan only for a last ditch Swiss challenge to prevent him from getting a shot off, before Kai Havertz headed the subsequent corner directly at Yann Sommer.

But Germany continued to probe, thought that they had taken the lead just before the midway point of the first half through an unlikely source, with midfielder Robert Andrich curling home a low effort from 25 yards out.

However, VAR ruled it out for a foul in the buildup, and left Germany feeling aggrieved.

10 minutes later, they were feeling even worse as Switzerland put the cat firmly among the pigeons when Ndoye latched onto a cross from Remo Freuler to leave his nation heading to the top of group A.

Germany struggled to find their rhythm again, with Switzerland comfortable with their advantage heading into the half time break.

Die Mannschaft pushed on after the break, but looked surprisingly short of ideas in the attacking third, with Switzerland keeping the hosts well away from their own goal.

Several penalty appeals were waved away by the referee as Germany looked to find the leveller that would see them top the group. At the other end, they had a massive lifeline when only the offside flag prevented Switzerland from doubling their lead.

Minutes later, Manuel Neuer was called into action as he dived full length to keep out a trademark long-range Granit Xhaka effort.

And it proved vital, as Niklas Fullkrug rose highest to nod home a much-needed equaliser in stoppage time to rescue a point, and leave Germany heading through top.

Stoppage time winner breaks Scottish hearts

A 100th minute goal ended Scotland’s hopes of EURO 2024 qualification, and left Hungary alive in Stuttgart.

Scotland began the game on the front foot, dominating possession as Hungary sat off and looked to hit Steve Clarke’s side on the counter attack.

And with their first break, they tested Angus Gunn as a long range effort from Bendeguz Bolla was pushed away by Scotland’s no.1.

Scotland continued to see most of the ball, though they failed to test Péter Gulácsi in the Hungary goal in the opening 20 minutes.

Hungary grew into the game without testing Gunn, but the momentum felt as though it was shifting after half an hour.

The half time whistle blow with Scotland having failed to register a shot, and Hungary having managed just one on target.

The second half began in a scrappy similar fashion, with a yellow card for Scott McTominay ruling him out of any potential last 16 tie.

The game had a lengthy delay as Barnabas Varga suffered what looked to be a serious injury when jumping for the ball, which required him to be stretchered off and ensured that there would be plenty of added time on top of the 90 minutes.

Minutes later, the first moment of controversy came as Armstrong was felled inside the penalty area after getting the wrong side of the Hungary defence, only for the referee to wave away the appeals.

The deadlock remained into 10 minutes of added time, with both sides likely to be out with a draw.

Finally, Hungary burst into life. Dominik Szoboszlai fired at Gunn, before Gunn was left thanking the woodwork as it kept out a rasping effort moments later.

Scotland had their first shot on target of the game in the seventh minute of stoppage time as Grant Hanley fired as Gulácsi. From a Scotland corner though, they were finally made to pay as Hungary hit them on the break.

A counter-attack down the right hand side saw the Hungarians break, before the ball found it’s way to Kevin Csoboth, who calmly fired the ball into the corner to break Scottish hearts, and leave Hungary dreaming of the last 16.
