Schweinsteiger played 35 matches for Man Utd, with just 18 of those coming in the Premier League, but he holds the club in high regard and often talks about their progress and struggles.

And unsurprisingly former Bayern Munich midfielder Schweinsteiger has opted to pick out two players in the same position to wax lyrical about.

Schweinsteiger has described Fernandes as “the brain” at Man Utd while he likes the way summer signing Casemiro “sniffs the danger”.

“Like he literally moves so smart on the field and do you know what, you actually like kind of underestimate [his work rate].

“Of course, he’s making his assists, or he is scoring the goals and makes great passes but Bruno Fernandes, he is working very hard.

“His numbers are high [for the distance] he runs on the field, and I really like watching him because whatever he does, it makes sense.”

On Brazil international Casemiro, Schweinsteiger added: “Casemiro is one of the best, definitely in that position, at the moment.

“He sniffs the danger quite well and he is a good passer. He scored an amazing goal against Switzerland [in the World Cup] as well and he is a very important piece for the Brazilian national team.

“He is one of the leaders there, and you can see that, and you can feel that and, yeah, I hope he can bring the sharpness back on the Manchester United field as well.”

There has been a big backlash in Germany over the team’s performances at the World Cup and Schweinsteiger has been particularly outspoken on their earaly exit.

Schweinsteiger said: “The appearance of the national team is not enough, that’s not enough. We invited the opponent. The fundamental problem is that we often invite the opponent.

“I’m disappointed and shocked with how this went today. The national team did too little. It’s not good enough. Statistics don’t matter in the end. You have to take your opponent out of the game.”
