Paul Scholes has backed Mason Mount and Kai Havertz to become ‘sensational players’, but believe Chelsea’s inexperience will cost them in the Premier League title race.

Chelsea were beaten for the second successive league fixture after losing 2-1 at Wolves on Tuesday night, Pedro Neto scoring a stoppage-time winner at Molineux as the home side came from behind to secure victory.

The defeat comes quickly after losing to Everton last weekend and has brought an abrupt end to a 14-game unbeaten run in all competitions, the west London side currently fifth in the Premier League, three points adrift of league leaders Tottenham and Liverpool who face each other in their game-in-hand this evening.

Frank Lampard questioned whether his side were suffering from fatigue in the immediate after-match of the loss to Wolves, though former Manchester United midfielder Scholes has pointed towards a lack of midfield creativity for their shortcomings.

Scholes believes the likes of Mount and Havertz have huge potential and will develop into ‘sensational players’ in the coming years, but thinks that Chelsea’s lack of experience will prevent them from challenging for the title this season.

“I just think there’s a little bit a lack of creativity on the pitch,” Scholes told Amazon.

“[N’Golo] Kante does what he does brilliantly well and he’s got two young players next to him in Mason Mount and Kai Havertz, who I think will be sensational players, but that’s why I don’t think they’ll win the league this year. It’s a bit early for them. They’ll be up there, close to Manchester City and Liverpool I just don’t think they are that ready.

“But in a year’s time with a bit of experience, know-how, a bit more quality, they’ll be up there challenging.”

Chelsea return to Premier League action when they face high-flying West Ham on Monday night, the two London rivals meeting in an intriguing derby clash at Stamford Bridge.
