The two sides met at St. Andrew’s in a big clash at the top of the League One table.

The Red Dragons went into the game sitting top of the table, three points clear of the Midlands outfit.

But goals from Jay Stansfield and Tomoki Iwata sealed an important three points for the hosts, moving them level on points with Wrexham with a game in hand.

Phil Parkinson’s side had taken the lead in the third minute through Jack Marriott, but a brace from Stansfield, with goals either side of half-time, put Birmingham ahead.

Wagner has issued a message to supporters following the win, celebrating a big three points against a potential promotion rival.

He posted an image of the team enjoying the victory to his Instagram story, applauding their performance.

“Scenes!!!” wrote Wagner, via Instagram.

“Big three points for BCFC.”

There were a number of famous faces at St. Andrew’s for the game, which had been dubbed the Hollywood derby.

Birmingham minority investor Tom Brady, famous for his NFL career, was in attendance at the game.

Meanwhile, Wrexham are co-owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, with the latter also appearing in Birmingham for the fixture.

David Beckham was also at the game, albeit as a neutral party, highlighting the significance of the game.

The victory will come as a big marker for Chris Davies’ side in their bid to earn a top two spot, but it will also afford Brady bragging rights over McElhenney after the publicity their attendance received prior to kick-off.

The Blues are back in the third tier for the first time since 1995 after suffering relegation last year, while Wrexham earned promotion from League Two at the first attempt to return to this level for the first time since 2005.

Birmingham City league position

Birmingham moved up to second in the table with their 3-1 win over Wrexham, having earned 13 points from a possible 15.

The Red Dragons are still top despite the defeat, with only goal difference separating the two clubs.

Parkinson’s side has played a game more at this early stage of the campaign, with Charlton Athletic in third also on 13 points.

Next up for Davies’ side is a trip to face Rotherham United on 21 September in a 3pm kick-off.

Big night for Birmingham

The win over Wrexham brought a lot of attention to both clubs, with the game even earning a monday night TV slot.

So earning a win for Birmingham will be a great momentum boost, and should give the team great confidence that they’re on the right path under Davies.

There is a lot of pressure on the club to gain promotion back to the Championship immediately given Wagner’s strong ambitions for the Blues.

This three points could prove quite important by the end of the campaign, with Wrexham also hoping to be in the mix for a top two or top six spot.
