AC Milan president Paolo Scaroni has paid tribute to the era that Silvio Berlusconi oversaw at the club, stating his belief that the current owner Gerry Cardinale can ‘retrace those steps’.

Berlusconi was a larger than life character that needs no introduction, given that he was the most successful President in Milan’s 125-year history, winning 29 trophies in the 31 years that he was at the helm.

After a very difficult period in the early 1980s, Berlusconi not only rescued his boyhood club from money worries but he set about elevating the Rossoneri to global dominance, which he certainly achieved.

After acquiring Monza in 2018, he led the Biancorossi back to Serie B after 19 years and then to a historic first promotion to Serie A in May 2022, meaning that he is adored by both sets of fans.

Scaroni was interviewed by Mediaset before the match between Milan and Monza who will contest the second edition of the Silvio Berlusconi Trophy, and his comments were relayed by MilanNews.

It will be an evening of great emotions…

“Really, I wouldn’t miss this match for any reason in the world. I have to say that I’m not the only one who feels emotions. Look at how many people we have here at San Siro, and with those who will watch the match on television, there are many of us who share this great emotion of the Berlusconi Trophy.”

What are your memories of Berlusconi?

“I had the privilege of knowing President Berlusconi in many capacities, especially as Prime Minister. Then I continued to see him a few days before his passing. I saw him as Milan and as Monza, so I have a clear and strong memory of him, of a person who managed to innovate in many fields.

“He was a great innovator, he looked at the world with optimism and he did it in many sectors, including football. The period he lived through was the brightest in the history of Milan, I think that the Milan of RedBird and Gerry Cardinale can retrace those very bright steps that we experienced in the past.

“Passion does everything, I see Gerry Cardinale very passionate about Milan. Let’s see, let’s start from tonight: a match not in the league that however attracted many people and I am very pleased.”
