Sassuolo midfielder Edoardo Iannoni believes that he and his team-mates prepared to face AC Milan in the best way they could, but it wasn’t enough.
Going into the game it felt like a banana skin for Milan, given their rollercoaster record against Sassuolo plus the fact that they are top of Serie B by three points and on course for an immediate return to Serie A.
There were some eyebrows raised when Paulo Fonseca made eight changes to the starting line-up but chose to keep Youssouf Fofana, Tijjani Reijnders and Rafael Leao in the XI, but it would be fair to say it paid off.
The game was pretty much put to bed inside 11 first-half minutes as Samuel Chukwueze opened the scoring and then got a second, after Tijjani Reijnders had scored a missile to make it 2-0.
Rafael Leao got in on the act to make it 4-0 at half-time, while Davide Calabria and Tammy Abraham added goals of their own to make it an eventual 6-1 scoreline.
Iannoni spoke alongside his head coach Fabio Grosso at the post-match press conference and he reflected on what was a difficult night for the Neroverdi.
“Milan makes the difference even against Serie A teams. We had prepared in the best possible way, but the difference was visible,” he said (via MilanPress).
“Now we are thinking about the championship, where we are more focused. San Siro? It is an honour, playing against a team like that gives you goosebumps. We will only take the emotions with us from tonight.”
