CEO Giovanni Carnevali has insisted that Sassuolo will arrive at San Siro tonight fully believing that they can cause a Coppa Italia upset.
Last season was a disastrous one for Sassuolo in many ways. After finishing a comfortable 13th in 2022-23, they ended up with three head coaches and a relegation to Serie B show for it.
However, Fabio Grosso’s team have certainly started the season well with 10 wins, four draws and one defeat from their first 15 games, opening up a three-point gap over Pisa in top spot.
Not only that but they have already knocked a Serie A opponent out of the cup, beating Lecce 2-0 away from home in the previous round, and they are unbeaten in eight games.
Carnevali gave an interview to La Gazzetta dello Sport in view of tonight’s match against Milan in the cup, and his comments come via MilanPress.
“We are going to play a serious match at San Siro because the Coppa Italia has value and we would like to win. And then it is nice to have the opportunity to challenge a great club like Milan and play again this year in such a prestigious stadium,” he said.
“Here, I see this challenge as an opportunity to give continuity to our long journey in Serie A. Waiting to return. Which game at San Siro do I remember with more pleasure? The victory against Milan by 5-2 in January 2023: it was not an easy moment, we played very well.”
