England head coach Sarina Wiegman praised her side’s ability to bounce back as the Lionesses triumphed over the Netherlands 4-0 in Zurich.
The Lionesses were back to their very best in their second game of Euro 2025, as goals from Lauren James, Georgia Stanway and Ella Toone saw England revive their tournament hopes after an opening game defeat to France.
Wiegman’s side flourished in a must-win scenario, keeping the fate of their knockout hopes in their own hands heading into the final group stage game against Wales.
“I’m very happy with the performance,” Wiegman said. “I think we bounced back really well from France, because we were not really happy with that performance. We had conversations, and how the team responded today was really good.
“The consequences of the results were huge and we knew before the tournament that we had a very hard group. They are all top countries and with huge rivalry.
“We knew exactly that, and then we lost the first game. I said that it’s not the end of the world, but it doesn’t put you in the best in the best position. So we know we had to perform really well today and I think we did.”
The Lionesses have never lost two games in a row with Wiegman at the helm and Wiegman says it is credit to the resilience her side has.
“The players reflect really well on themselves,” the head coach praised. “We always review games, and even when games go really well and things fail, we don’t make it a disaster.
“So the France game was not nice, but at the end of the day it’s one game. You want to do better the next game, and I think it’s really important that you come together, you have conversations together, because it’s a team sport, and I think that’s what the team does really well.
“I felt a little tension today, but I think that’s completely normal. You really want to stay in the tournament and you really want to win, but we also know other than this is a very good team. So at the same time for me, the focus on my job is refuelling.”
England now have their sights set on their final group stage match of the tournament as they travel to St Gallen to face Wales.
The Lionesses’ opponents have already been eliminated following back-to-back losses to the Netherlands and France, but Wiegman warned her side not to be complacent.
“It would be very complacent if we just thought we could beat Wales no matter who we put on the pitch,” Wiegman affirmed.
“We have a very good squad, but we need a very good performance against Wales because they are very hard to beat.”
