Saprissa visits Verdes in search of Group C lead

MIAMI – The 2025 Concacaf Central American Cup continues with Verdes FC hosting Deportivo Saprissa in Group C on Tuesday at FFB Stadium in Belmopan, Belize.
Verdes will be in search of its first points this 2025 edition after falling 4-1 against Motagua in its opening match. Krisean López scored the lone goal for the side from Belize.
Deportivo Saprissa enters the match after earning a 2-nil against CS Cartaginés in its opening fixture. Joseph Mora and Newton Williams scored for Saprissa, while goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado recorded two saves and collected a clean sheet.
In Deportivo Saprissa’s victory, Newton Williams became the first Panamanian debutant to score a goal for a Costa Rican club in the entire history of the Central American Cup.
Joseph Mora scored his first goal and the third fastest goal ever for Deportivo Saprissa in the Central American Cup, at the three-minute mark.
Cartaginés coach Andrés Carevic saw his unbeaten run in the Central American Cup come to an end, with his record now standing at 7 wins and 3 draws, and for the first time in the tournament, his team failed to score.
The Purple club sits second in Group C with three points and will be in the hunt for a win to climb to the top.
All-Time series
They will face each other for the first time in the Central American Cup. For Verdes FC, it will be their second time facing a Costa Rican opponent, after falling 0-3 to LD Alajuelense in the 2023 edition (Michael Barrantes, Freddy Góndola, and an own goal by Marco Zavala).
Throughout its international participations in Concacaf club tournaments, in five matches in the Central American Cup, the Scotiabank Concacaf League, and the Copa Interclubes, Verdes FC holds a record of four losses and one draw, 1-1 against Puntarenas FC in the second leg of the Round of 16 of the Copa Interclubes at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio (BLZ). The Belizean goal was scored by Deris Benavides, while Rodolfo Arnáez scored for the “Ticos.” With the draw, Puntarenas FC advanced to the next round with a 6-1 aggregate score.
Deportivo Saprissa has faced Belizean clubs three times in Concacaf club tournaments (W-3), with two matches in the Scotiabank Concacaf League and one in the Copa Interclubes. The “Monstruo Morado” has not faced a Belizean club since August 7, 2019, when they won 6-2 in the second leg of the Preliminary Round of the Scotiabank Concacaf League against Belmopan Bandits at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa (Josué Martínez, Christian Bolaños, and Manfred Ugalde), while Héctor Martínez scored for the Belizeans. Deportivo Saprissa won the series with a 6-2 aggregate score.
