Fans crowded into the Morumbi Stadium on Saturday to see their beloved São Paulo try to extend their lead over Internacional at the top of the Brasileiro Série A table, but instead settled for the draw against América Mineiro.

The home team got the crowd energized in the 29th minute when Robert Arboleda knocked a cross down into the path of Igor Liziero, but the shot deflected wide of the goal.

In the first minute of stoppage time, however, São Paulo made the breakthrough. Nenê crossed the ball in from the left channel and Diego Souza powered his header into the corner of the net to take the lead into half-time.

In the second half, the home side appeared to back off and allowed the visitors from Belo Horizonte to grow into the game.

São Paulo had a chance in the 58th minute when Everton Felipe received the ball just outside the 18-yard-box, but he dragged his shot wide of the far post.

América-MG had not put goalkeeper Sidão under pressure before scoring the equalising goal in the 81st minute.

Carlinhos hit a heavy shot that Sidão saved but Matheusinho was the first player to react and scored the rebound to tie the match late.

São Paulo will be disappointed not to take all three points at home and now hold only a tentative two-point lead over Internacional, who play on Sunday.

América Mineiro can be pleased with sticking around in the match at the Morumbi before snatching a result late-on.

The road draw moves the Coelho, at least temporarily, into tenth place in the standings. While their mid-table rivals may overtake them on Sunday, América-MG has developed some positive momentum with a draw at the league leaders.
