For the second week in a row, São Paulo blew a valuable chance to gain automatic entry into the 2019 Copa Libertadores group stage.
After an embarrassing 2-0 loss last week at Vasco, São Paulo drew relegation-threatened Sport Recife 0-0 at home on Monday night – failing to take advantage of a shock Grêmio draw at relegated Vitória on Sunday.
With one match remaining, São Paulo and Grêmio remain level on 63 points, with Grêmio ahead with more total wins. The worse of the two teams will be forced to start in the second qualifying round of the Libertadores next year.
For both SPFC and Sport, everything will now come down to next week’s results when São Paulo face Chapecoense, while Sport host Santos.
On Monday night, São Paulo pressed from the get-go and Diego Souza missed an incredible chance within the first two minutes of the match.
That wouldn’t stop the striker from later showing his individual ability minutes later.
In the second half, SPFC had a chance to take the lead from the spot after Éverton was taken down in the area.
However, Nenê would be denied by Mailson and the match remained scoreless.
São Paulo nearly won the match in stoppage time on Santiago Tréllez’s header, but his shot hit the post and SPFC would have to live with just the lone point.
