The Clausura 2018 champion will be decided between Santos Laguna and Toluca, after both sealed their tickets to the Liga MX final on Sunday.
Toluca needed to overcome a 1-2 defeat in the semi-finals first leg against Club Tijuana. And at home, they crushed Xolos 4-1 to win the tie with a 5-3 aggregate score.
Fernando Uribe was the Diablos hero in the second leg after scoring a hat-trick. Tijuana’s chances vanished as two of its players saw the red card.
While in the other semi-final, Santos demolished Club América 4-1 at home in the first leg thanks to Julio Furch’s brace and Jonathan Orozco denying Jérémy Ménez penalty strike.
At legendary Azteca Stadium, América got within one goal of equalising the aggregate score, but Santos overcame the struggling moments of the game and ended up imposing their style and convincingly taking a 6-3 win in the tie.
Santos Laguna will likely host Diablos on Thursday, and the second leg is likely to be played next Sunday at Toluca’s Bombonera.
This will be the third time that Toluca and Santos will face each other in a Liga MX final. ‘Evil’ have defeated ‘Good’ on the two previous occasions.
In Verano 2000 tournament, Toluca cruised to a 7-1 aggregate score victory and in Bicentenario 2010, the trophy slipped away from the Guerreros hands in a heartbreaking fashion as they ended up losing a penalty shootout were they had a two-goal lead.
