Club América was thrashed 4-1 in the Clausura semi-final first leg against Santos Laguna, which leaves them in very bad shape heading into Sunday’s second leg at the Estadio Azteca.

In the 15th minute, Oswaldo Martínez received a delayed pass from Djaniny to nail the first for the Laguneros, though it seems that goalkeeper Agustín Marchesín could have done more.

Just after the hour mark, Cecilio Dominguez would level the match as Santos Jonathan Orozco misjudged the flight of the ball and left Dominguez with an empty goal.

Julio Furch scored a fantastic goal from long distance just six minutes later to give the hosts a 2-1 lead at halftime. Jérémy Ménez missed a penalty just before half-time which could have leveled the match.

Less than 10 minutes into the second half, the ball bounced through the box and fell kindly for Furch, who took his time in sliding the ball into the far corner.

Finally, Edwin Cetré scored his first Liga MX in some style, getting behind the América defence for the club’s fourth and final goal of the evening.

Marchesín was vital as the score could have ended much more lopsided. His efforts will give the Eagles a lifeline, as at least a 3-0 win will assure them a place in the Clausura final.
