Club América opened their 2021 Apertura campaign with a 0-0 draw against Querétaro on Thursday leaving manager Santiago Solari frustrated by their slow start.
“They didn’t create chances [against] us, we were solid in defence, but it was difficult for us to generate,” said Solari after the match.
“Each game presents you with different difficulties because the beauty of this sport is that there is a rival and he plays to try not to make you generate your virtues, then each game changes and in today’s game we were able to circulate the ball better at times.”
The 44-year-old went on to admit things could have ended differently if Maximiliano Perg had been sent off for a challenge against Roger Martinez.
“Querétaro did his job, we would have had more space if they were left with 10, it is an objective analysis, not a complaint,” he said.
“Roger gets very frustrated because they hit him, they damage him … it would have been 60 minutes with an extra man, maybe it would have been something else.”
Solari then went on to note that missing players due to injury or the Olympics also played a role in the result.
“We have an injury, in the case of Benedetti and [Federico] Viñas,” he confirmed.
“We have to continue working, we do not have Henry Martín, Sebastián Córdova, Memo Ochoa and Jorge (Sánchez) [but] we are very happy to support Mexico.”
América will look to bounce back in their next match against Necaxa on 31 July.
